If I were you I’d consider joining the UMM club – join with Graham Potter the chairman – graumm@rocketmail.com

I think it’s a tenner a year and if you make it known to him that you’re after one I’m sure he’ll let you know what he hears of. Also an absolute fountain of knowledge of all things UMM and has quite a collection… maybe you could persuade him to part with one?

Otherwise I’d keep checking ebay, trovit, farm trader, auto trader and the other classifieds. Keep an eye out on here – I always post whatever I have seen.

    Where abouts are you based?

    regards,

    fritz

Good work! If you’re fine with agricultural you’ll get along well in one. Excellent offroad and towing.

I have seen this one a couple of times when I’ve been in that part of Devon in mine, looked good roaring past. Are you taking the second ‘for parts’ UMM too?

Regarding soft top hoops, I am hoping to borrow a set and have some copied for myself, I can look at getting another set done as well. Where are you based?

    regards,

    fritz

damn that looks really smart in that paint too.

Hold up. PTO?!!! Can you forward pictures and details of this? I’ve been after a PTO to suit mine (the same) for as long as I’ve had him!

Also considered an engine change – currently considering Audi 3.0 TDV6 out of an A4 or A6.

Looks like a labour of love with all of the welding, nice work!

….heated seats?! Next level UMM comfort!

Looking pretty smart. How is the winch powered?

Check out the http://www.pecas-umm.com site, Phillipe who runs it is pretty helpful and his english is excellent – drop him an email.

I got a full set of flexibles from there for my Alter II but I know that they are the same as those needed for the Transcat so I presume also the same for Alter I.

Regarding wheel cylinder do you know the type?

    Hi Les,

Unbelievable, sounds like a crook quoting you! Easy enough to get hold of master cylinders, quite a few on ebay uk listed for Pugs.

Be interested to hear what you get up too with the power steering.. Had mine rebuilt a couple of times.

Try Adrian Flux for insurers, its hard to find an insurance company that knows what an UMM actually is. I pay £400 a year fully comp with it parked on the drive and for 5000 miles a year. I did have a car stolen a few years ago so that has probably put it up a bit.

ahh.. instead of going for the “quick reply button” go a little further down to the faded green “reply” button – it’s next to the subscribe and RSS feed buttons. That’ll let you do a normal reply and load 3 pictures at a time.

Looks sweet Damo! Glad you didn’t sell this one.

Can you post some more pictures and details on your steering damper installation??

I think this will be my next task… after replacing the knackered shocks on mine.

The Alter has been an absolute beast towing our boat across the country and standing up to quite a lot of abuse with not really a lot of maintainance recently… time to give it a little love!

Sent the handbrake cables off to Speedy Cables to be remanufactured (before I found that Pecas did them new for half the price… doh!)

Just ordered a bundle of spares from Pecas UMM Parts in Portugal.

    Front discs & pads
    Water pump
Gear stick & transfer lever gaters
    Clutch kit
    Door open limiters
    Leaf spring bushes

…. and most interestingly a rear disc brake conversion (uses the standard hand brake cables) for €215. I’ll report back on the conversion!

They write in excellent english and have been great at replying with quotes and information about parts.

    The contact there is:

I’m probably going to need new shock absorbers soon… x 8!! Whose are you running? I’m thinking about popping up to Devon 4×4 and seeing what they have on the shelf that is suitable.. I’ll be doing a 2” lift with the modified shackles that Damo kindly sent me..

If I were you I’d send this away to be reconditioned (that’s what I’m about to do with mine), there may even be someone in your local town who can do it for you. Make sure not to throw it away at least until you have a replacement that definitely fits!

Where did you get a gaiter pack from? My gear lever one has split..

Also – when you bleed the clutch you want to be doing it from the bottom up. Ie. from the clutch slave. I presume you have cut the inspection hatch into lower part of the angled panel to the right of the heater (to the left of your legs)? You need to do that to get to the clutch slave then make a bleeder out of an oil pump pot and a length of clear tube, then open the nipple on the clutch slave and pump from the bottom of the system to the top. Obviously make sure it doesnt pour out of the top. I usually start from a dry system..

Snorkel kit – probably have to make your own. Rubber flare arches I would try the flexible ones that you can get for defenders.

For lining material I would suggest megavanmats who do an ultra stretch material – used lots for vw vans and the like.

Mine is always fine on emissions though I know Lance always used to drop a can of diesel redex into his before the test and take it for a good motorway blast!

Have to do the brakes soon on mine, do you know what discs and pads to get??
